Move the mouse pointer to the ridge line, then move along the line to the position desired, and click. This brings up the control window:

This results in an indicator showing the position of the new cupola:

The cupola is immediately viewable in 3D:

If you want to change the cupola, go back to the Cupolas tab and click the orange cupola indicator.
