The advantage of a package is this: once you have a package created, you can re-use this whenever you build. There are upwards of HUNDREDS of choices to make. It is not wise to have to choose every piece of trim and the associated fasteners for every building you create. That would be a waste of time. The idea of the package is that you can apply hundreds of pre-made decisions at once.
Yes we are aware that constructing a package takes time. But this is a ONE TIME EFFORT. Once the package is done, it's done. You don't have to make these choices any more. Moreover, you can now hire salespeople that can accurately quote buildings and you don't have to worry whether or not he or she remembered every detail. They don't worry about the details. They just pick the package they need.
You can have as many trim packages as you feel the need for. Why do you need more than one? Well, if you normally have steel panel roofing, you tend to have certain bits of trim that are appropriate to that style. But these same trim pieces aren't necessarily useful for a shingle roof system. Hence you may have packages that are applicable for steel roof or shingle roof systems. The number of packages you will use will depend solely on how varied your building needs are.

Note 3: You choose the SKU/product that fits this application. You click the USE checkbox if normal use of this package usually uses this product or feature. The MULTIPLE LENGTHS checkbox is checked for products that you have multiple lengths for in your data; e.g. if you have Fascia in 10',14' and 20' lengths, selecting MULTIPLE LENGTHS lets the software decide which length is best for any given Fascia measurement. When you are creating a package, the COLOR doesn't much matter. What DOES matter is getting the right product. Why doesn't the color matter? Because when you use the color enforcement capability, the software looks at the SKU number chosen and then finds the one of the preferred color for the building in question. This also works for fasteners. If you have a metal siding that is Forest Green, the appropriate Forest Green fastener of the specified type is also automatically chosen.
